Background
The resolution “Nature-based Solutions for supporting sustainable development,” adopted at the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA Res. 5.5), marked a significant step in promoting the use and integration of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) across various development sectors. The recent Intergovernmental Consultations on Nature-based Solutions in Nairobi, Kenya underlined a need for identifying standards and criteria to address divergences and provide a framework for implementation of Nature-based Solutions, as well as identifying and documenting best practices and case studies for NbS. It was also emphasised that implementing consistent and successful NbS requires robust knowledge transfer, access to guidance for those implementing interventions and enabling policies at the global, national, and subnational levels. Looking ahead at the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly it is imperative to prioritise collective action and joint efforts for advancing NbS and to leverage existing work. This strategic approach not only ensures the efficient use of resources but also prevents delays in the implementation of NbS.
Agenda
In preparation for UNEA-6, IUCN aims to raise greater awareness and understanding of the role of the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions in support of the implementation of UNEA Resolution 5.5. This webinar will discuss the alignment of the IUCN NbS Standard with the multilaterally agreed upon definition of NbS and how the criteria of the IUCN NbS Standard have been guiding the continued implementation of consistent and successful NbS at policy, finance and actions on the ground. It details what has transpired since its 2020 launch, the partnerships and actions that have formed around it, and what is anticipated next.
