The Center for Biodiversity and Conservation (CBC) at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) is a leading international research and conservation organization dedicated to understanding and conserving the world’s biological diversity. The CBC was established in 1993 to contribute the Museum’s extensive scientific and educational resources to the conservation of our planet’s biodiversity.

The CBC’s work is guided by the following four pillars:

  • Science: The CBC conducts cutting-edge research on biodiversity and its conservation. This research informs the development of conservation strategies and helps to identify the most pressing threats to biodiversity.
  • Conservation: The CBC works to conserve biodiversity on the ground through a variety of projects, including:
    • Protected area management
    • Species conservation
    • Community-based conservation
  • Education: The CBC educates the public about the importance of biodiversity and its conservation. This education takes place through a variety of channels, including:
    • Public programs
    • Teacher training
    • Online resources
  • Policy: The CBC advocates for policies that support biodiversity conservation. This work includes:
    • Providing scientific advice to governments and international organizations
    • Engaging in public policy debates

The CBC is a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s largest conservation organization. The CBC works closely with IUCN to:

  • Develop and implement conservation strategies
  • Share scientific knowledge
  • Promote the use of science in conservation decision-making

The CBC is also a member of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), a network of organizations that share biodiversity data. The CBC’s data contributions to GBIF help to improve our understanding of the world’s biodiversity and support conservation efforts around the globe.

The CBC is committed to advancing diversity, inclusion, and equity in the field of conservation. The CBC believes that a diverse and inclusive conservation workforce is essential to achieving conservation success. The CBC’s work in this area includes:

  • Supporting the development of a diverse and inclusive conservation workforce
  • Promoting the use of traditional and local knowledge in conservation
  • Advocating for policies that support diversity and inclusion in conservation

The CBC is a leading international organization that is making a significant contribution to the conservation of our planet’s biodiversity. The CBC’s work is guided by science, informed by traditional and local knowledge, and committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity. The CBC is a valuable partner for governments, international organizations, and other conservation organizations.
