Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability

The Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability at Arizona State University is the hub of ASU’s sustainability, complex-systems, and responsible-innovation research initiatives. Named for philanthropist Julie Ann Wrigley, the institute advances research and business practices for an urbanizing world, in partnership with its sister program, the College of Global Futures. Both sit within the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory®, an audacious effort to shape and design a better global future for all.

The institute’s mission is to articulate and exemplify ASU’s university-wide commitment to sustainability and responsible innovation; to support and encourage ASU units and partners in the teaching, learning, discovery, and innovation of sustainability and complex-systems modeling; to implement, extend, share, and promote sustainable practices locally, nationally, and globally; and to connect scientists, scholars, humanists, engineers, technologists, policy makers, business leaders, students, and communities to enhance the capacity to address challenges that affect humanity’s ability to thrive. With more than 840 transdisciplinary experts, the Institute is one of the largest concentrations of sustainability scholars in the United States. It places special emphasis on urban environments — particularly the greater Phoenix metropolitan area as a living laboratory — and runs research and education programs spanning biodiversity and conservation, climate change and adaptation, energy, food systems, water, policy, and more.

The institute has been ranked #1 in Innovation by U.S. News & World Report and works across ASU’s four campuses, including through the College of Global Futures, which offers degree programs to train the next generation of practitioners, entrepreneurs, and leaders.
