The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is an international non-profit environmental organization that works to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. TNC has been working since 1951 to protect and restore ecosystems around the world, including forests, grasslands, wetlands, oceans, and freshwater systems. TNC also works to address the challenges of climate change, invasive species, and overfishing.

IUCN, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, is a membership union of governments and civil society organizations. IUCN is the world’s oldest and largest environmental organization, with over 1,400 member organizations and 15,000 experts. IUCN’s mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable.

TNC and IUCN are both committed to conserving nature, but they have different roles to play. TNC is a non-profit organization that works directly on the ground to protect and restore ecosystems. IUCN is an intergovernmental organization that provides scientific guidance and support to governments and other organizations working on conservation.

TNC and IUCN work together in a variety of ways. TNC is a member of IUCN, and TNC staff serve on IUCN’s committees and task forces. TNC also partners with IUCN on projects around the world. For example, TNC and IUCN are working together to protect the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

TNC and IUCN are both important organizations in the fight to conserve nature. By working together, they can achieve more than they could ever do on their own.

Here are some specific examples of how TNC and IUCN have worked together:

  • In 2010, TNC and IUCN launched the Global Oceans Initiative, a partnership to protect the world’s oceans.
  • In 2012, TNC and IUCN launched the Climate Change Adaptation Initiative, a partnership to help communities adapt to the impacts of climate change.
  • In 2014, TNC and IUCN launched the Sustainable Landscapes Initiative, a partnership to promote sustainable land use practices.

These are just a few examples of how TNC and IUCN are working together to conserve nature. By working together, these two organizations can make a real difference in the fight to protect our planet.
