Woodland Park Zoological Society

The Woodland Park Zoological Society operates Woodland Park Zoo, a 92-acre zoological garden in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. The zoo opened in 1899 and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The Society is the nonprofit organization that operates the zoo and its conservation, education, and field programs.

Woodland Park Zoo is home to more than 900 animals representing more than 250 species, with a focus on species from the Pacific Northwest, the Asian tropical forest, the African savanna, and the tundra. The zoo’s field conservation work spans more than 35 projects in the Pacific Northwest and around the world, with priority species including the Western pond turtle, Oregon spotted frog, the red wolf, the Hawaiian crow (ʻalalā), the snow leopard, and Asian elephants. The zoo’s Treehouse exhibit, Zoomazium, and other learning facilities make it one of the most-visited educational institutions in the Puget Sound region.

Woodland Park Zoo is a member of the IUCN and contributes to international species survival programs through its participation in AZA Species Survival Plans and SAFE programs. The zoo’s combination of urban-based public engagement and a substantial field conservation portfolio — particularly in the Pacific Northwest — makes it a distinctive contributor to U.S. conservation capacity and public support for species recovery.
