Click hereto learn more about all The Explorers Club Grant Programs. It’s no secret that our reefs are in danger. Scientists all over the world are joining the efforts to restore them, and that includes Russell Laman. Russell is a multiple international award-winning photographer and filmmaker, who recently graduated from Boston University with a degree in Marine Science and Biology. His undergraduate research culminated in an honors thesis focusing on the use of novel photomosaic techniques to analyze the structural complexity and conservation success of restored Belizean coral reefs. Last year, he was awarded a SEA Grant to conduct in-depth research on restoration efforts among Indonesia’s Raja Ampat reefs. Along with valuable findings about the restoration taking place in this region, he was also able to restore a tract of reef himself, in a way that will continue to inform the studies he initiated. This includes a 96m2 study site with 384 newly planted corals from 13 different genera. Keep an eye on Instagram to learn more about Russell’s important work and the SEA program.
