Biodiversity Funders Group

Biodiversity Funders Group (BFG) is a U.S.-based professional association of environmental, conservation, and climate and energy grantmakers working to advance a just, healthy, and resilient future for all life on Earth. Founded in 1987, BFG convenes nearly 1,000 philanthropic staff and trustees from foundations and grantmaking institutions across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and beyond to share perspectives, expertise, and strategy on biodiversity and conservation funding.

BFG’s work is organized around four pillars: sharing knowledge and strategies, cultivating partnerships, identifying needs and emerging issues, and creating avenues for leadership. The organization runs a portfolio of programs and place-based initiatives that bring funders together around shared priorities — from land and ocean conservation to climate and energy — and supports peer-led collaboration through field trips, working groups, and an annual members meeting. The group also embeds diversity, racial equity, and inclusion (DEI) as central to its mission, recognizing that advancing equity is both a moral imperative and a prerequisite for a more effective conservation movement.

With 75+ member organizations, 200+ program partners, and more than $1 billion in collective environmental grantmaking, BFG is a leading convener in the U.S. conservation philanthropy landscape. Its 2025-2030 Strategic Roadmap charts a path toward deeper funder collaboration, stronger grantee support, and greater impact on the biodiversity crisis. BFG is governed by an executive committee of foundation leaders and is headquartered in the United States.
