Tropical Resources Institute (Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies)

The Tropical Resources Institute (TRI) is a research and education center at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES). TRI supports interdisciplinary, problem-oriented student research on the most complex challenges confronting the conservation and management of tropical environments and natural resources worldwide.

TRI was founded in 1983 by a group of F&ES faculty and students who were concerned about the rapid loss of tropical forests and the degradation of tropical ecosystems. Since its founding, TRI has supported over 1,000 student research projects in more than 50 countries.

TRI’s research programs focus on a wide range of topics, including:

  • Forest conservation and management
  • Biodiversity conservation
  • Climate change and tropical ecosystems
  • Sustainable development
  • Human-environment interactions

TRI’s research is conducted by a team of faculty, staff, and students from a variety of disciplines, including forestry, environmental science, anthropology, economics, and political science. TRI’s research is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the United States Agency for International Development, and other organizations.

TRI also offers a variety of educational programs for students, faculty, and the public. These programs include:

  • Summer research fellowships
  • Undergraduate and graduate courses
  • Public lectures and workshops

TRI’s educational programs are designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to address the complex challenges facing tropical environments and natural resources.

TRI is committed to advancing the understanding of tropical environments and natural resources, and to promoting the conservation and sustainable management of these resources. TRI’s research and educational programs are helping to build a more sustainable future for tropical ecosystems and the people who depend on them.

Here are some of the ways that TRI is making a difference:

  • TRI’s research is helping to identify the causes of tropical deforestation and degradation, and to develop strategies for their prevention.
  • TRI’s research is helping to develop new methods for conserving biodiversity and managing tropical forests.
  • TRI’s educational programs are helping to train the next generation of conservationists and environmental leaders.
  • TRI’s public outreach programs are helping to raise awareness of the importance of tropical forests and natural resources.

TRI is a leading center for research and education on tropical environments and natural resources. TRI is making a difference in the world by helping to conserve and sustainably manage these vital resources.

Membership with IUCN

TRI is a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). IUCN is a global environmental organization that works to conserve nature and promote sustainable development. TRI’s membership with IUCN allows it to collaborate with other organizations around the world to address the challenges facing tropical environments and natural resources.

TRI’s membership with IUCN provides a number of benefits, including:

  • Access to IUCN’s resources and expertise
  • Opportunities to collaborate with other organizations on conservation projects
  • A platform to raise awareness of the importance of tropical forests and natural resources

TRI is committed to using its membership with IUCN to make a difference in the world. By working with other organizations, TRI is helping to conserve and sustainably manage tropical environments and natural resources.

Here are some of the ways that TRI is using its membership with IUCN:

  • TRI is participating in IUCN’s Global Forest Watch program, which monitors deforestation and forest degradation around the world.
  • TRI is working with IUCN to develop new methods for conserving biodiversity and managing tropical forests.
  • TRI is raising awareness of the importance of tropical forests and natural resources through IUCN’s public outreach programs.
